The first phase of the Greater Karachi Bulk Water Supply Scheme, known as the K-IV Project, is on track for completion in October 2024.
This vital initiative, overseen by the federal government and executed by the Water and Power Development Authority (WAPDA), aims to deliver 650 million gallons of water per day to Karachi from Keenjhar Lake in Sindh’s Thatta District.
Currently, construction efforts are underway to realize this project, which spans 121 kilometers in total. The intake channel itself measures 0.61 kilometers. The approved budget for the project stands at Rs 126,000 million, with Rs 20,000 million allocated in the PSDP for the year 2022-23. Notably, Karachi has been grappling with severe water shortages for some time, leading residents, even in affluent areas, to rely on expensive tanker water supplies.
