We got to see some computer-generated images giving us a sneak peek at the upcoming Google Pixel 9 Pro. Now, it’s time for its smaller and more affordable buddy to be in the spotlight – the regular Pixel 9.
Right away, you can see a significant change. Unlike the previous Pixel 8, the new Pixel 9 has a rear camera system with three lenses, and it’s clear that one of them includes a periscope zoom lens. This improvement is a big step up for the regular Pixel models, making them more similar to the Pro version when it comes to camera features.
Another change is Google’s adoption of the ‘flat sides’ trend initially popularized by Apple some time ago. The curved frame of the Pixel 9 has given way to a sleek, iPhone-inspired flatness.
The transformation extends to the camera island as well. It no longer spills over into the frame; instead, it takes on an oval shape across its entirety (unlike the Pixel 8, where only the camera housing area was oval), nearly spanning the phone’s entire width. Interestingly, it doesn’t end within the frame but rather near it.
The island’s material still looks metallic and keeps the familiar Pixel style. Although it doesn’t exactly copy past Pixel designs, it holds enough uniqueness to stay true to the Pixel design identity.
As for the front, we finally have symmetrical bezels, a very welcome change, a flat screen, and a centered punch-hole cutout for the selfie camera.
The Pixel 9 is projected to have dimensions of 152.8 x 71.9 x 8.5 mm (with the camera bump adding a thickness of 12 mm).
The new model is a bit taller, wider, and more stylish compared to the previous one. It’s anticipated to have a 6.1-inch screen, slightly smaller than the Pixel 8, suggesting a slight change in shape. The official release of the Pixel 9 is still a few months away, as these phones usually come out in the Fall each year.
