It appears that lock screen widgets might be making a comeback with Android 14, bringing a feature that was once part of Android’s functionality. Mishaal Rahman, previously Chief Editor at XDA Developers, uncovered a promising hint within the latest Android 14 beta build.
Within this beta build, a new SystemUI flag called “widget_on_keyguard” was discovered. This strongly suggests that Google is actively working on reintroducing lock screen widgets. However, it’s important to note that this finding was within the Android 14 beta build specifically designed for Pixel devices. This raises the possibility that the feature may be exclusive to Pixel smartphones.
While concrete evidence is somewhat limited at this stage, this development aligns with a trend set by Apple, which introduced widgets to the iOS lock screen just last year. It’s conceivable that Google is responding to this move by Apple, aiming to provide a similar functionality to Android users.
In addition to this anticipated feature, the latest beta build allows for customization of shortcuts on the lock screen, particularly the ones located in the lower left and right corners. Once again, this feature has been observed on Pixel phones, leaving uncertainty about its availability on other Android 14 devices.
Now, instead of being restricted to default shortcuts, users have the flexibility to choose from a diverse range of apps and actions. Options include the Camera app, a toggle for activating Do Not Disturb mode, the Flashlight, the Google Home app, a Mute toggle, a QR code scanner, Wallet access, or instant video recording.
To make these customizations, you simply need to go to the Wallpapers & Style menu in your device’s Settings, select the Lock screen option, and find the Shortcuts sub-menu.
Android 14 is anticipated to launch alongside the Pixel 8 series in October.
