Islamabad, September 12, 2023 – As of today, September 12, 2023, petrol and diesel prices in Pakistan have reached an unprecedented high, standing at Rs 305.36 per liter and Rs 313.84 per liter, respectively. These rates are anticipated to hold steady until September 15, 2023.
On September 12, 2023, petrol hit Rs 305.36 per liter, while high-speed diesel (HSD) reached an astounding Rs 313.84 per liter. This marks the first time prices have breached the Rs 300 per liter mark, causing widespread concern among the populace.
The surge in prices began on August 31, 2023, when the interim government announced a sudden and substantial increase in fuel costs.
At the core of this tumultuous surge lies the sharp depreciation of the Pakistani rupee (PKR) against the robust US dollar. Over the past ten days, the PKR has experienced a steep decline, hitting an all-time low of PKR 305.54 against the US dollar on August 31, 2023.
Despite the adverse effects of soaring petroleum prices on local consumption and businesses, the country found itself importing energy commodities valued at an astounding $791 million in July 2023, a sharp contrast to the $1.44 billion imported during the same month the previous year.
