In a landmark triumph for the Congress, the national party is poised to establish its governance in Telangana, displacing K Chandrashekar Rao’s Bharat Rashtra Samiti (BRS). With a substantial lead in more than 66 constituencies within the state, the Congress is on the verge of achieving a momentous success in the 2023 Telangana assembly elections, effectively displacing the incumbent government led by Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao’s BRS.
This marks the initial instance where BRS faces the prospect of electoral defeat in Telangana since the state’s establishment in 2014. K Chandrashekar Rao is set to relinquish the Chief Ministerial position, a departure from his continuous tenure since 2014. Congress figure Revanth Reddy is anticipated to assume the role.
Sunil Kanugolu, a key figure in election planning, played a significant role in the Congress triumph in Telangana, replicating the party’s substantial victory in the earlier Karnataka elections this year. According to information from the Indian Express, Kanugolu enjoyed autonomy in Telangana to apply his strategies and manage internal affairs. However, this level of freedom was not extended to him in Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh, where leaders such as Ashok Gehlot and Kamal Nath were supposedly not in agreement with his approaches.

Sunil Kanugolu, hailing from Karnataka, stands out as a prominent electoral strategist in India, lauded for steering the Congress party to success in the Karnataka elections of May 2023. His strategic prowess was equally instrumental in orchestrating the Congress victory in Telangana, where he spearheaded the party to a resounding triumph.
In a significant turn of events two years ago, Kanugolu received an invitation from KCR to convene at his farmhouse in Hyderabad. The Chief Minister of Telangana extended an offer for Kanugolu to join the election strategy team for the upcoming polls. However, contrary to expectations, Kanugolu opted to reject the offer, aligning himself with the Congress party instead.
Recognized as a close advisor to senior Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, Kanugolu assumed a pivotal role in devising a substantial portion of the Bharat Jodo Yatra. Prior to his association with the Congress, the electoral strategist had lent his expertise to political entities such as AIADMK, BJP, and DMK.
Sunil Kanugolu joined the Congress party after Prashant Kishor turned down their invitation to serve as the election strategist. He was selected as a member of Task Force 2024, a group formed by the Congress to implement the New Resolution (Nav Sankalp) declared in Udaipur.
Before this, Kanugolu was a member of Prashant Kishor’s team responsible for devising the election strategy for the BJP during the 2014 Lok Sabha elections, which led to Narendra Modi becoming the Prime Minister of India.
