A tourist faced public criticism after a video, originally posted by British traveler Anne Malambo, surfaced on the Instagram account Bali Livin’. In the footage, the tourist was seen riding a motorcycle in Bali without a helmet, drinking, and carrying a large bag. This incident comes amid increased scrutiny on visitors riding motorbikes in the wake of three foreigners’ deaths in the district in recent weeks.
The Buleleng police had recently announced their intention to crack down on tourists riding motorcycles. Ni Made Ayu Marthini, Indonesia’s Deputy Minister of Tourism, also emphasized that Bali is subject to tighter regulations, responding to concerns about the safety of tourists and the local community.
The video sparked backlash from social media users, both domestic and foreign. Some criticized the tourist for not taking a taxi, while others pointed out the dangers of not wearing a helmet and having exposed skin while riding a motorbike. There were contrasting opinions, with some defending the tourist’s carefree attitude and others condemning the behavior.
Rumors of a “motorbike ban” in Bali had circulated for months, with speculation that tourists might be prohibited from renting motorbikes. However, Deputy Minister Marthini clarified in October that there was no outright ban but rather stricter enforcement of existing rules. She emphasized the importance of tourists respecting local laws, including wearing helmets and having the necessary licenses for their safety and that of others.
The crackdown on motorbike regulations aims to ensure compliance with existing laws. AKP Bachtiar Arifin, head of the traffic unit for Buleleng Police, highlighted the need for changes following recent fatalities. Preventive measures, such as hotels accompanying foreign guests on motorbikes, are being considered. Increased police patrols in areas with many foreigners and strict law enforcement are part of the initiative to address traffic violations by tourists, including the lack of international driver’s licenses and failure to wear helmets.
