Reed Ryan, a promising college football player, tragically passed away at the age of 22. The University of Minnesota’s defensive end collapsed during a workout last month.
Originally attending North Dakota State for four years, Ryan, a 6-foot-3 star from Wisconsin, had recently moved to Duluth for the summer. He achieved a career-high of eight total tackles in the current season.
According to a family-written obituary, Reed Ryan succumbed to an undetected genetic heart condition on November 21 while exercising in the gym after a training session. Despite immediate CPR efforts by UOM medical personnel, he was transported to St. Mary’s-Duluth hospital.
Head coach Curt Wiese expressed profound sadness, acknowledging the devastating impact of Reed’s loss on the players and staff. Wiese praised Reed’s positive attitude, contagious smile, and sincere concern for others, highlighting his contributions to the team and the community.
Reed Ryan’s high school achievements included winning the State of Wisconsin Defensive Player of the Year and achieving more than 100 career wins as a wrestler. The NDSU football community also paid tribute to Reed, describing him as the ultimate teammate with a selfless spirit, expressing their deep sorrow at his passing.
