As the World Cup 2023 unfolds in India, the influence of Hindu nationalism in Indian politics is becoming increasingly apparent.
It has become a strategy to secure the votes of the country’s majority. Unfortunately, this political stance has led to attacks on Pakistani players and team members.
Following a recent incident involving Pakistani sports commentator Zainab Abbas, an Indian lawyer named Vineet Jindal has lodged a complaint with the International Cricket Council against Pakistani batter and wicketkeeper Mohammad Rizwan. The complaint is centered on Rizwan’s act of offering a prayer on the cricket field during Pakistan’s opening match against the Netherlands.
Jindal argues in the complaint that Rizwan’s public display of his religious practice, especially in the presence of many Indians, is a deliberate attempt to emphasize his faith, which goes against the inclusive spirit of sportsmanship. He suggests that this act raises questions about the true essence of the game and prompts inquiry into the player’s personal beliefs while on the field.
The complaint further contends that Rizwan, by dedicating his victory to the people of Gaza, is providing insight into his religious and political convictions. The Indian legal expert is urging the ICC to take stringent action against the Pakistani cricketer.
