Meta is incorporating AI across its platforms through the Meta AI assistant. The AI assistant is currently undergoing testing on WhatsApp, where beta versions for both Android and iOS feature a convenient shortcut to the assistant above the chat list for quick access.
The Meta AI is an optional feature for WhatsApp users, allowing them to completely ignore it without affecting their overall experience. In the latest beta version of the Android app, users now have the option to remove the Meta AI button from the Chats tab. This option is accessible in the Chats section of the app’s settings and is gradually rolling out to beta users this week.

The Meta AI functions like other virtual assistants, providing real-time information from the web through Microsoft Bing for search queries. It also offers context-based suggestions for discussions in both individual and group chats. To add a touch of entertainment, the assistant will have various AI characters for more engaging interactions. While these features may appeal to some, it’s reassuring to note that Meta is not imposing the AI experience on all users.
The capability to hide the Meta AI shortcut is present in version 2.23.25.15 of the WhatsApp beta app on Android and is expected to reach iOS soon. The standard non-beta version of the app currently lacks both the AI assistant and the option to hide it, with no clear timeline for when these changes will be implemented.
