Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairman Barrister Gohar has strongly emphasized that the party will not be banned, despite ongoing tensions stemming from protests and clashes with security forces.
In a press briefing following his meeting with PTI founder Imran Khan outside Adiala Jail, Barrister Gohar condemned the violence during recent protests but reassured the public that Imran Khan would soon reveal the party’s future strategy.
Gohar clarified that Imran Khan had not been made aware of the controversial events of November 26, when gunfire erupted during a PTI-led protest. He reiterated that PTI remains committed to peaceful political activity, stating, “We condemn the violence from whichever side the bullets were fired. PTI is a peaceful party, and our workers are enduring difficult conditions.”
The PTI leader also addressed rumors regarding Imran Khan’s health, dismissing reports that suggested his condition had worsened. “Alhamdulillah, he is in good health,” Gohar assured, adding that he had personally met with Imran Khan in jail to brief him on the protests and other key issues following the November 24 call for action.
These health rumors were fueled by allegations from PTI leader and former Deputy Speaker of the National Assembly, Qasim Khan Suri, who claimed Imran Khan was being subjected to mental distress and possibly poisoned. Barrister Gohar rejected these claims, asserting that Imran Khan remains in good health.
The November 26 protests, triggered by Imran Khan’s call for a march to Islamabad, escalated into violent clashes between PTI supporters and police. There were conflicting reports from PTI leaders and law enforcement regarding the casualties. PTI officials claimed that several workers had been killed, while police sources in Islamabad and Rawalpindi stated that over 170 officers were injured after PTI protesters attacked with firearms and sticks.
Gohar expressed his sorrow over the loss of life, including both PTI workers and law enforcement personnel. He revealed that Imran Khan had expressed deep regret over the fatalities and injuries sustained by both his supporters and the police. “Imran Khan has always advocated for peace, and these tragic events are part of a negative propaganda campaign aimed at sowing division,” Gohar added.
Barrister Gohar also addressed attempts to divert attention from the protests by focusing on incidents at D-Chowk and Sang Jani. He questioned whether such violent incidents should be tolerated, citing historical examples of gunfire during past political unrest. “Would it have been acceptable if bullets had been fired in Sang Jani?” he asked, calling for an investigation into the matter. “A commission should be formed, just like the inquiry into the Model Town tragedy.”
Imran Khan, according to Barrister Gohar, has instructed that a requisition be submitted to convene a session of the National Assembly to discuss the current situation. The PTI leadership continues to push for a fair and impartial investigation into the violence surrounding the November protests.
