Good news for consumers as lower flour prices are on the way, courtesy of substantial wheat imports from Russia. Local flour importers have confirmed that three cargo ships loaded with Russian wheat are en route, promising to alleviate the ongoing wheat shortage and potentially lower prices by up to 20 rupees per kilogram.
The first shipment is anticipated to reach port by mid-September, providing timely relief for consumers who have been grappling with high flour costs for months.
Acknowledging the challenges faced by families in affording basic staples like bread, a knowledgeable importer stated, “These wheat imports from Russia should lead to more reasonable costs.”
With the arrival of Russian wheat and subsequent milling into flour, importers estimate a potential price drop of 15-20 rupees per kilogram throughout September. This is a significant reduction from the current rate of 160 rupees per kilogram.
The relief couldn’t come soon enough for many households feeling the financial strain of elevated flour costs. Access to Russian wheat supplies is expected to stabilize the market and ensure an ample supply of affordable flour through the year’s end.
While global food supplies continue to be influenced by geopolitical factors, this incoming shipment brings a much-needed respite for local consumers struggling to afford flour. At present, more affordable bread seems to be on the horizon.
