The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has informed the Supreme Court of Pakistan that February 11, 2024 has been set as the date for the general elections in the country.
During the hearing of the case related to the scheduling of general elections in 90 days, the ECP informed the three-member bench led by Chief Justice Qazi Faez Isa about the election date.
The lawyer representing the Election Commission of Pakistan informed the Supreme Court’s panel that the delimitation process is set to conclude by November 30, and the elections are scheduled for February 11, 2023.
It’s important to mention that the highest court is currently listening to the pleas of various parties, including the Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) and the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), who are all advocating for timely elections in the nation.
The Chief Justice inquired about President Arif Alvi’s perspective on the issue. Justice Athar Minallah pointed out that the President of Pakistan holds the authority to determine the election date.
Subsequently, the Election Commission was instructed to approach President Arif Alvi to seek his viewpoint on this matter.
The lawyer representing the Election Commission assured the apex court that all the necessary preparations will be completed by January 29. He also mentioned that the elections are planned for a Sunday to ensure the highest possible voter participation.
