ISLAMABAD – The National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) has approved a Rs1.96 per unit increase in the Quarterly Tariff Adjustments (QTA) for distribution companies (DISCOs) and K-Electric (KE) for the first quarter of FY 2024-25.
This tariff hike will allow NEPRA to recover an additional Rs1.187 billion from consumers as part of their electricity bills in December 2024. The decision was made during a hearing held on November 20, 2024, which was attended by the Ministry of Energy, DISCOs, CPPA-G, K-Electric, and other stakeholders, along with the general public.
NEPRA clarified that the previous QTA of Rs1.74 per unit for FY 2024-25, which is set to expire in November, means the net impact of this adjustment would be an additional Rs0.22 per unit.
While the tariff hike is set to take effect in December, some commentators suggested delaying it until January 2025 to ease the burden on consumers. Additionally, Arif Bilwani, a representative of small and medium manufacturers, called for an investigation into the declining demand across all DISCOs and urged NEPRA to address ongoing load-shedding issues.
