The State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) has announced the release of a commemorative Rs. 55 coin to mark the 555th birth anniversary of Baba Guru Nanak Dev Ji.
The coin, issued by the federal government for this significant occasion, is composed of 79% brass and copper, 20% zinc, and 1% nickel. It measures 30 millimeters in diameter and weighs 13.5 grams.
Design Details
The front side of the coin features a crescent moon and a five-pointed star rising toward the northwest. Along the coin’s edge, the words “Islamic Republic of Pakistan” are inscribed in Urdu. Beneath the crescent moon, the year of issuance, 2024, is displayed numerically, surrounded by two upward-curved wheat stalks. The coin’s denomination, “55” in bold digits and “Rupees” in Urdu script, is positioned on either side of the crescent and star.
On the reverse side, the coin bears an image of a memorial dedicated to Sri Guru Nanak Dev Ji. Above the image, the words “555th Birthday Celebrations” are inscribed, while below the structure, “SRI GURU NANAK DEV JI” is written. At the bottom edge of the coin, the dates “1469–2024” represent the span from Guru Nanak’s birth to the current year.
Cultural and Religious Significance
Pakistan is home to diverse religious identities and the birthplace of many revered historical figures, including Baba Guru Nanak Dev Ji, the founder of Sikhism. Guru Nanak is celebrated as one of the greatest personalities born in the region that now constitutes Pakistan.
Sikhism, a global religion with millions of followers worldwide, holds Pakistan as the location of some of its most sacred sites.
The Rs. 55 commemorative coin will be available starting November 22, 2024, at the counters of all field offices of the SBP Banking Services Corporation.
