The Tragic Events Unfold
In June, Candelario left her daughter alone in a dirty playpen at their Cleveland residence while embarking on a 10-day vacation to Detroit and Puerto Rico. Upon her return, she discovered Jailyn unresponsive and immediately called 911. Despite paramedics’ efforts, the toddler was pronounced dead at the scene. An investigation revealed disturbing conditions in which Jailyn had been left – in a playpen with a dirty blanket and a liner soaked in urine and feces.
Legal Proceedings and Guilty Plea
The autopsy disclosed that Jailyn succumbed to starvation and severe dehydration. In a surprising turn, Candelario pleaded guilty to aggravated murder and child endangerment as part of a plea agreement. This decision resulted in the dismissal of two additional murder charges and an aggravated assault charge. The sentencing hearing is scheduled for March 18, with the possibility of a life sentence looming over Candelario.
Mental Health Considerations
Candelario’s defense attorney, Patrick Milligan, has hinted at potential mental health challenges that might be presented during the sentencing. He urges the public to view Candelario beyond the tragic circumstances, emphasizing the importance of understanding any underlying mental health issues.
From Ecuador to the U.S.

She initially worked as a Spanish Teacher at Horizon Science Academy Cleveland Middle School before transitioning to Leah’s CLC in June 2020. Subsequently, she moved on to Northcoast Academy and eventually took on the role of a Family Resource Specialist at the Cleveland Metropolitan School District.
A Life Marred by Tragedy
Candelario’s professional journey took a devastating turn in February 2024 when she faced arrest for negligence related to her daughter’s untimely death. The unfolding legal proceedings underscore the tragic consequences of the events surrounding Jailyn’s passing, revealing a deeply distressing chapter in Candelario’s life.
