The Nobel Peace Prize was recently awarded to Iranian human rights activist Narges Mohammadi for her unwavering dedication to fighting for the rights of women in Iran and her broader efforts in advocating for human rights and freedom.
Mohammadi, who is presently incarcerated, has faced immense personal sacrifices in her courageous struggle. She has been subjected to 13 arrests, five convictions, and a total prison sentence of 31 years along with 154 lashes.
This year’s Nobel Peace Prize had been the subject of much speculation, with figures like Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Russian dissident Alexei Navalny considered strong contenders for the prestigious honor. Noteworthy past recipients of the Nobel Peace Prize include the European Union, recognized for its contributions to peace, reconciliation, democracy, and human rights in Europe, as well as former U.S. President Barack Obama for his exceptional efforts in enhancing international diplomacy. Other notable laureates include Nelson Mandela and Frederik Willem de Klerk for their pivotal roles in peacefully ending apartheid and ushering in a new democratic era in South Africa.
The Nobel prizes, instituted in 1895 by inventor Alfred Nobel in his will, have been awarded since 1901. They acknowledge outstanding achievements in physics, chemistry, medicine, literature, and efforts towards peace.
