The Interim Government has gained approval from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) to institute a temporary relief program aimed at assisting low-income consumers grappling with high electricity bills. This program is designed to assist individuals who use up to 200 units of electricity per month.
Under this initiative, the government will be permitted to collect electricity payments in manageable installments from the identified group of consumers. While the IMF has provided its endorsement, the final approval lies with the Federal Cabinet. If implemented, this relief effort is projected to benefit approximately 4 million electricity consumers across the nation.
Initially, the Interim Government had proposed extending relief to consumers using up to 400 units. However, this proposition did not receive approval from the IMF. If it had been accepted, it could have assisted around 32 million consumers.
Furthermore, the IMF has emphasized the significance of implementing stringent measures against electricity and gas theft to bolster revenue recovery. The global financial institution has also recommended an increase in gas tariffs by 45 to 50% starting from July 1. This development could pose a challenge for consumers, especially with the winter season approaching in a few months.
