SEOUL – Martial law imposed by President Yoon Suk Yeol in South Korea was lifted after strong resistance from lawmakers and the public on Wednesday.
Citizens, blocking military trucks and tanks, prevented them from entering key government buildings. Reports indicate that President Yoon was forced to revoke the martial law within just six hours.
Opposition leaders hailed the move as a victory for democracy, attributing it to the united front of parliament and the public. Thousands of people gathered outside the parliament, creating a barrier that stopped the military from entering. As a result, lawmakers successfully passed a resolution to annul the martial law.
Across the country, citizens took on security duties, preventing the military from accessing other important locations. The six-hour standoff between the public and security forces garnered significant international attention.
In the face of widespread protests and public unity, President Yoon had no choice but to lift the martial law.
