Shoaib Bashir was born on October 13, 2003, in Surrey, England. His parents are originally from Pakistan. Shoaib is a right-arm offbreak bowler in cricket. He began his cricket journey by playing for Guildford Cricket Club in Surrey.
Surrey let him go when he was only 17, but Somerset saw his potential and invited him to join their team. Eventually, they signed him up for the 2023 season. Bashir played his first T20 match for Somerset against Hampshire in June, and just four days later, he made his debut in a first-class game against Essex.
He has played six first-class and seven List-A games so far, but caught the eyeballs of the selectors in England’s recent training camp that took place in UAE.
At a tall height of 6 feet 4 inches, Bashir was a key player in Somerset’s victory in the T20 Blast this year. His ongoing contract is set to expire in 2025.
Rob Key, who is the director of cricket for England, pointed out Bashir’s natural skills, especially his ability to release the ball from a high point. Key highlighted that Bashir could be valuable for the team when playing on spin-friendly pitches in India.
All-rounder Axar Patel was the star of the show when England last toured India, losing 3-1 despite winning the first Test in Chennai.
