Maggie Steffens, a three-time Olympic gold medalist in water polo, is grieving the unexpected loss of her sister-in-law, Lulu Conner. Lulu, the younger sister of Steffens’ husband Bobby Conner, passed away at the age of 26 due to a medical emergency. She had traveled to Paris to support Steffens in the 2024 Summer Games.
Steffens, who married Bobby in November 2023, expressed her heartbreak to the Associated Press on July 28. “She was so excited for the Olympic Games,” Steffens said. “She’s the light of the world and brought so much joy to everyone.”
In a poignant tribute to Lulu, Steffens dropped a bouquet of flowers into the Seine River during the opening ceremony on July 26. She acknowledged the overwhelming support from her team and the immense struggle she and her family are enduring. “Feeling her spirit here is amazing, and I hope we can make her proud every single day,” she added.
Adam Krikorian, the women’s water polo coach, reflected on Lulu’s vibrant energy and her excitement to support the team. In her honor, the players plan to channel that energy into their games.
On Sunday, Flavor Flav, a dedicated supporter of the U.S. women’s water polo team, shared a video in which Bobby Conner presented him with a special clock necklace that Lulu had made. Flavor Flav announced he would wear it throughout the Olympics.
Lulu had also crafted clocks for each member of the women’s water polo team. The U.S. team began their preliminary rounds on July 27 with a 15-6 victory over Greece and will next face Spain on July 29.
Steffens, known for her emphasis on team unity, reiterated the importance of sticking together. “Together, the impossible seems possible. It’s all about the circle, the team, and knowing we’re in this together,” she stated.
In this challenging time, the support and camaraderie of her team and the memory of Lulu are driving Steffens and her teammates to honor her spirit and legacy in every game they play.
