As officers approached the vehicle, they were met with gunfire, resulting in injuries to Officer McKinney and two of his colleagues, as well as two individuals in the car. Despite the valiant efforts of medical personnel, Officer McKinney succumbed to his injuries at the hospital.
Perpetrator Identified
The suspect responsible for Officer McKinney’s untimely demise was identified as Jaylen Lobley, an 18-year-old individual involved in the shootout. Lobley, previously arrested just over a month before the tragic incident, faced charges related to auto theft, possession of a prohibited machine gun, and vandalism, among others.
A Life of Service
Officer Joseph McKinney embarked on his journey with the Memphis Police Department in February 2020, demonstrating unwavering courage and dedication throughout his three-year tenure. Completing his training at the Academy in July 2020, McKinney served at Mount Moriah Station before transferring to Raines Station, where he was assigned to the Alpha shift.

McKinney’s commitment to duty and his steadfast resolve served as a beacon of inspiration to his colleagues and the community alike. Remembered for his courage and selflessness, McKinney leaves behind a grieving wife and daughter.
Final Farewell
Friends, colleagues, and well-wishers are invited to pay their respects at Raines Station, 791 East Raines Road, where Officer McKinney’s squad car will be on display.
