Cyndi Lauper’s son, Declyn Lauper, has been released from jail after being arrested and charged with allegedly illegally carrying a loaded firearm in New York City. The incident occurred following a shooting in Harlem, where a 24-year-old male was shot near W. 112th St. and Adam Clayton Powell Jr. Blvd.
According to the criminal complaint filed in Manhattan Criminal Court, Declyn, 26, was apprehended near the crime scene and allegedly had a loaded Glock with seven bullets in its magazine inside a fanny pack. He is charged with two counts of criminal possession of a firearm and was accused of possessing the weapon “with intent to use it unlawfully against another.”
Prosecutors claim that Declyn and another man took an Uber ride to the location just before the crime occurred. The victim, Omar Lewin, was also charged with criminal possession of a weapon and was taken to Mount Sinai Morningside hospital in stable condition.
After his arrest, Declyn appeared in Manhattan Criminal Court, where a judge set his bail at $20,000 cash. His father, David Thornton, an actor known for Law & Order, was seen at the court with a large sum of money before Declyn’s release on bail.
During the hearing, Assistant District Attorney Harriet Jiranek stated that both Declyn and the other individual drove to the location with firearms for what seemed to be illicit activity. Declyn pleaded not guilty to both charges and is expected back in court on Tuesday. He has retained legal counsel.
Declyn, also known as “Dex,” is a rapper and has had previous encounters with the police. In July 2022, he was arrested after being found in a stolen 2014 Mercedes Benz C350, resulting in charges of felony unauthorized use of a vehicle. Declyn pleaded guilty at the time and was ordered to stay out of trouble for one year.
