According to Parks Canada, they received an alert from a GPS device late Friday, indicating the bear attack in the Red Deer River Valley, west of Ya Ha Tinda Ranch in Banff National Park. The bear was later euthanized due to its aggressive behavior.
The victims were a Canadian couple along with their dog, as stated by Kim Titchener, the founder of Bear Safety and More, who was also a close friend of the family. Titchener, an expert in bear safety, mentioned that while encounters with bears are on the rise due to more people venturing outdoors, fatal attacks remain extremely rare.
Bear sightings tend to increase in autumn as they become more active in their search for food before hibernating during the winter months. Banff National Park, which sees over four million tourists annually, is home to both grizzly and black bears.
Approximately 60 grizzly bears reside in Banff National Park, and they are considered a threatened population in Alberta, noted Titchener. Parks Canada mentioned that their rescue team had to travel by ground overnight to reach the location, as weather conditions at the time prevented helicopter use. The response team arrived early Saturday, where they sadly discovered the two deceased individuals.
