The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) government plans to increase fares for the Peshawar Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system to address a major financial shortfall.
They aim to reduce an annual operating deficit of over Rs3 billion by raising fares by Rs5 to Rs10. This hike is expected to help cover operating costs and reduce the Rs3 billion in subsidies from the provincial budget.
In a recent meeting led by KP Finance Advisor Muzammil Aslam, officials discussed managing the BRT system’s rising costs. They proposed a daily unlimited travel pass costing Rs150 for the general public and Rs100 for women, students, transgender individuals, and senior citizens. Additionally, they suggested charging one rupee per passenger to fund the operational expenses of the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Urban Mobility Authority (KPUMA).
Muzammil Aslam confirmed that the fare increase is being seriously considered, with a final decision pending approval from the KPUMA board. This fare hike is seen as essential for maintaining the BRT service, which had 80 million riders last year and a total of 215 million since its start in 2020. The KP government aims to balance affordable public transportation with financial sustainability to keep the BRT running effectively for Peshawar’s residents.
