The Board of Intermediate Education Karachi (BIEK) has decided to grant up to 15% additional marks to students in pre-engineering, pre-medical, and general science Part I. This decision follows the orders of Sindh Caretaker Chief Minister Justice (retd) Maqbool Baqar, who approved the recommendations of a fact-finding committee investigating unusually low marks in this year’s intermediate Part-I exams.
The committee’s report led to the removal of the BIEK in-charge of the IT section. According to Justice (retd) Maqbool Baqar, the decision to award extra marks was based on the committee’s recommendation. Students in pre-engineering, pre-medical, and general science will receive 15 extra marks in Maths, 12 in Physics, Chemistry, and Statistics each, and six in Zoology and Botany each.
The committee further recommended establishing paper patterns and a marking scheme at the beginning of each academic year, effective for three years. The caretaker CM instructed officials to increase the number of paper inspection centers in Karachi to 10. He emphasized the use of an optical marks recognition system for checking MCQ papers to reduce errors and stressed the importance of training for employees, including head examiners, examiners, and invigilators.
Justice (retd) Maqbool Baqar held the controller of examinations, deputy controllers, and IT manager responsible for conducting the 2023 examinations. Previous results, released on January 23, indicated high failure rates in various groups, prompting the need for corrective measures and improvements in the examination process.
