Former NFL wide receiver Mike Williams tragically passed away at the age of 36, and authorities have now revealed the cause of his death.
Based on information from the Hillsborough County Medical Examiner’s Office, it was reported that Williams passed away due to a rare bacterial infection called sepsis and complications related to it. This happened in the days after he was taken off life support following a work-related accident at the end of August.

The summary report stated that the cause of death was “bacterial sepsis with cerebral abscesses and necrotizing lobar pneumonia due to multiple dental caries and retained dental roots.” Moreover, arteriosclerotic cardiovascular disease was listed as a contributing factor in Williams’ passing. We’re still waiting for the complete toxicology report and autopsy, which will provide more information about this very sad incident.
Williams’ next of kin revealed that he used Kratom, a legal herbal supplement, on a daily basis. The family was worried that people might bring him drugs that weren’t prescribed by the doctor when he was in the hospital. But, there’s no sign that something bad happened, and they said he passed away from natural causes.
The Tampa Bay Times shared that Williams’ family was worried about how he ended up in the hospital. Some people said he might have taken drugs that weren’t prescribed to him while he was there. The Tampa police looked into the situation, but eventually, they stopped the investigation.
Williams had an impressive NFL career
In late August, there was a workplace accident, and Williams got really sick. He had trouble breathing, problems with his heart, and a severe infection in his brain. He had to go to the hospital and stay in the intensive care unit. Even though the doctors tried to help by giving CPR and putting a tube to help him breathe, he had a heart attack on September 1. Sadly, he didn’t make it and passed away on September 12.
Williams had an impressive career in the NFL, playing for the Buccaneers from 2010-2013, the Bills in 2014, and a final season with the Chiefs in 2016. Throughout his career, he recorded 223 catches for 3,089 yards and 26 touchdowns.
