LAHORE – In Punjab, all citizens who reach the eligible age are required by law to obtain a valid driving license before operating any motor vehicle. Failure to do so may result in fines or legal action. To obtain a license, applicants must successfully pass both theoretical and practical tests administered by the competent authorities. The government charges a fee for issuing driving licenses, which has recently been revised.
Recent Fee Hike for Driving Licenses
Earlier this year, the Punjab government announced a significant increase in the fees for all types of driving licenses across the province, including major cities like Lahore and Rawalpindi. This revision came after 20 years of unchanged fee structures. The hike covers learner licenses, motorcycle licenses, and car/jeep licenses.
Revised Fee Structure for Driving Licenses
Here is a breakdown of the updated fees for different types of driving licenses, effective from November 2024:
- Learner License Fee
- The new fee for obtaining a learner’s driving license has been set at Rs. 500.
- This is a significant increase from the previous fee of Rs. 60.
- Motorcycle Driving License Fee
- Previously, the fee for a five-year motorcycle license was Rs. 550.
- Now, the fee has been adjusted to Rs. 500 per year, meaning that the total cost for a five-year license would be Rs. 2,500.
- Car/Jeep Driving License Fee
- The new fee for a car or jeep driving license has been set at Rs. 1,800 per year.
- This marks a sharp increase from the previous fee of Rs. 950 for a five-year license, which now amounts to Rs. 4,750 for the same period under the new structure.
Key Points to Remember:
- Driving License Requirement: All eligible citizens in Punjab must obtain a valid driving license before operating a motor vehicle.
- Fee Hike: The revised fees have been implemented after a 20-year gap, and they cover various categories of driving licenses, including learner, motorcycle, and car/jeep licenses.
- Fee Payment: The fees are now higher and are charged annually, so applicants should be prepared to pay based on the duration of the license they wish to acquire.
