US Ambassador to India, Eric Garcetti, has reportedly informed his staff in India about the potential strain in US-Indian relations due to New Delhi’s diplomatic dispute with Canada.
He suggested that relations could face a difficult period and mentioned the possibility of reducing contacts with Indian officials for an unspecified duration. The US has taken Canada’s allegations regarding Indian government agents’ involvement in a murder seriously and has called for a thorough investigation.
When questioned about Ambassador Garcetti’s conversation with his team, an anonymous State Department spokesperson stated, “We don’t have anything for you on this.” The spokesperson emphasized Garcetti’s dedication to the strong partnership between the US and India, emphasizing the significance of their relationship.
The dispute arises from allegations of Indian government agents’ participation in the murder of Sikh leader Hardeep Singh Nijjar, leading to international outcry. India has dismissed the accusations as baseless and driven by ulterior motives. In response to Canada’s expulsion of an Indian official, India reciprocated by expelling a senior Canadian diplomat. Additionally, India urged Canada to scale down its diplomatic presence, and temporarily halted visa issuance for Canadian citizens, further straining relations between the two nations.
