Internet services will be suspended in several major cities starting at midnight tonight as part of security measures ahead of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) protest scheduled for November 24. According to sources, the affected cities will include Islamabad, Lahore, Rawalpindi, Multan, and Gujranwala.
While mobile phone services will remain operational for now, internet and broadband services will be temporarily halted. A decision regarding the suspension of mobile services will be made based on the situation on the ground.
Authorities have not yet provided an official statement on the duration of the suspension.
Security Alerts and Measures: The National Counter-Terrorism Authority (NACTA) has issued a warning about potential terrorist threats during the PTI protest in Islamabad. The alert highlights risks from the extremist group Fitna al-Khawarij, which is reportedly planning attacks in major cities, including Islamabad, during the protest. NACTA has indicated that members of this group have already crossed the Pak-Afghan border and are targeting public gatherings and rallies. Law enforcement agencies have been urged to remain vigilant.
Islamabad Prepares for Protest: In response to the upcoming protest, the Islamabad administration has implemented extensive security measures. The entire sensitive Red Zone and D-Chowk have been sealed off, and additional reinforcements have been deployed from other provinces to assist the Islamabad police. A total of 2,200 containers have been placed to block 24 critical entry and exit points across the city, with 10 key points already shut off. Fourteen more routes are expected to be closed by tonight, restricting movement in and out of the capital.
Over 19,000 officers and personnel from the Punjab Police have been stationed in Islamabad, supported by Rangers and Frontier Corps (FC). Additional police forces and equipment have also been dispatched from Sindh and Azad Kashmir to reinforce the Islamabad police. Rangers personnel have been deployed at key locations, including 26 No. Chungi, Tarnol, Sangjani, and Kati Pahari in Attock. These personnel are equipped with anti-riot gear and tear gas shells.
Public Order Measures: The Islamabad police have reiterated that Section 144 is in effect across the city, prohibiting gatherings and unlawful activities. The police spokesperson emphasized that public safety remains a priority and that all necessary steps will be taken to enforce the law and maintain order. Citizens are urged to avoid participating in any illegal activities during the protest and to cooperate with law enforcement efforts to ensure public safety.
With heightened security measures and a clear focus on maintaining order, authorities are preparing for a significant security presence in the capital ahead of the PTI protest.
