The Incident: A Day at the Beach Turns Tragic
On a seemingly ordinary day, Lulu Gribbin and her friends were enjoying the sun and sand along the beaches of Walton County, Florida. It was a day meant for relaxation and fun, but it quickly turned into a nightmare.
Two teenagers, including Lulu Gribbin and McCray Faust, were attacked by sharks within a span of 90 minutes along approximately four miles of beach. The attack on Lulu and McCray happened around 3 pm, as reported by South Walton Fire District Fire Chief Ryan Crawford. Both girls sustained severe injuries that required immediate medical attention.
The Severity of the Injuries
The shark attack left Lulu with devastating injuries. She lost her hand and a leg during the attack. Following the incident, she was swiftly airlifted to Sacred Heart Hospital in Pensacola. The journey to the hospital, which took approximately an hour and 20 minutes by road, was critical as Lulu had lost a significant amount of blood.
Medical experts highlight the severity of Lulu’s condition, noting that losing over 40 percent of one’s blood without immediate surgical intervention significantly increases the risk of death. Lulu lost two-thirds of her blood, rendering her condition life-threatening.
Lulu’s Mother Recounts the Horrific Beach Trip
Ann Blair Gribbin, Lulu’s mother, vividly recounts the horrifying events of that day.
“On Friday, we decided to walk down from where we were staying, right outside Rosemary Beach, for lunch. After lunch, we were walking back on the beach to the girls, and everyone on the beach was standing, looking out into the water. No one was in the water, and all we heard was there was a shark. We started to look as well. My friend called both her daughters, and they were not answering, so she started to panic and said there is something wrong and started running, and so we all did.”
The beach was packed with people just looking. Ann came upon a group of people surrounding someone on the ground and looked down, and it was Lulu who was there. Ellie found her and said, “Mom, it’s Lulu.” Ann saw her wounds and started to scream. Lulu was lifeless, her eyes closed, mouth white and pale.
The wound on her leg was gruesome, and Ann held her hand, reassuring her daughter that she was there.
Emergency Response and Medical Intervention
Almost immediately, emergency responders arrived. Lulu was loaded onto a board and transported by a beach truck before being airlifted to Sacred Heart Hospital in Pensacola. During the chaotic drive to the hospital, Ann and her friend prayed continuously for Lulu’s life.
At Sacred Heart, Lulu was already in surgery when they arrived. The doctors informed the family that Lulu had lost her left hand and her right leg had to be amputated halfway up from her knee to her hip. Despite the severity of her injuries, Lulu’s vital signs were stable, giving the family a glimmer of hope.
Lulu’s Remarkable Resilience
Lulu’s strength and resilience were evident even in the immediate aftermath of the attack. She underwent multiple surgeries, with medical professionals closely monitoring her condition. Remarkably, Lulu did not have surgery the following day as expected; her vitals were so stable that the medical team removed the breathing tube, and she began breathing on her own.
Lulu’s first words to her family were, “I made it.” Her determination to survive and her positive spirit were a testament to her incredible inner strength.
The Heroic Actions of Bystanders
The quick actions of bystanders on the beach played a crucial role in saving Lulu’s life. A man and a younger boy pulled her out of the water, and once on shore, two doctors and two young women, one a nurse, applied tourniquets to her wounds. These immediate actions were vital in controlling the bleeding and stabilizing Lulu before she could be transported to the hospital.

Ann Blair Gribbin expressed immense gratitude for everyone involved in saving Lulu’s life. She thanked the doctors, nurses, EMTs, and the individuals who acted swiftly on the beach. The support from friends, family, and the community provided much-needed strength to the family during this challenging time.
