A Tragic Loss: April 29, 2024
On April 29, 2024, tragedy struck as Officer Eyer succumbed to injuries sustained while bravely fulfilling his responsibilities. He was shot in the line of duty while assisting fellow officers in the apprehension of suspect Terry Clark Hughes. Alongside Officer Eyer, two officers from the U.S. Marshals task force, Sam Poloche and Alden Elliott, also lost their lives in the same incident.

Terry Clark Hughes, wanted for serious crimes including unlawfully possessing a firearm and attempting to evade law enforcement multiple times in Lincoln County, North Carolina, initiated the confrontation that led to the tragic events on Galway Drive in the North Tryon Division. Hughes’s actions resulted in eight officers being wounded, with three of them, including Officer Eyer, ultimately succumbing to their injuries.
