The Devastating Incident
In the quiet hours before dawn, while soldiers rested in their sleeping quarters, the drone strike unfolded, causing chaos and claiming lives. Amidst the pandemonium, eight wounded service members were successfully evacuated, some in critical condition, now stabilized.
This attack ranks among the deadliest assaults on U.S. service members since the heartbreaking Kabul suicide bombing in 2021, which claimed the lives of 13 American soldiers during the withdrawal from Afghanistan.
The Shocking Drone Assault
On January 29, 2024, the Pentagon disclosed the heartbreaking news of the drone attack, revealing that three American service members, including Breonna Moffett, lost their lives in a base in northeast Jordan.
Unraveling the Attack
The assault took everyone by surprise as a One-Way Unmanned Aerial System (OWUAS) struck the container housing units. Noteworthy is the unusual location and timing compared to previous attacks, capturing the attention of experts.
Shockingly, one soldier was in bed during the assault. Preliminary findings point to the Pentagon attributing the drone attack to a militia supported by the Iranian Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, active in Iraq and Syria. The Department of Defense is actively investigating, with early reports suggesting the Shahed drone, allegedly supplied by Iran to Russia, as the culprit.
Remembering Breonna Moffett’s Roots
Born on January 19, 2001, in Georgia, United States, Breonna Moffett was the beloved daughter of Bernard and Francine Moffett, and the eldest of four siblings. Raised in Savannah, she excelled academically and athletically at Windsor Forest High School before enlisting in the military.
Breonna’s Journey
In 2018, after graduating, Breonna pursued higher education at South University while embracing her role as a nurturing older sister. Tragically losing her life at 23, she left behind a legacy of dedication to family, education, and service to her country.
The Enlistment and Beyond
Joining the Army Reserve in 2019 after high school, Breonna balanced her studies to become an X-ray technician with coaching kids’ sports teams and working at a pharmacy. Her altruistic nature led her to aid those with disabilities through a home care provider.
Overseas Deployment
In August, Breonna embarked on her first overseas deployment with the 718th Engineer Company, 926th Engineer Battalion, stationed at Fort Moore. Despite challenges, she stayed connected with her loved ones, reflecting her caring nature.
Tragically, on January 28, 2024, Breonna’s life was cut short in the drone attack in Jordan, leaving behind a legacy of service and compassion. In honoring her memory, let us not forget the sacrifices made by those who dedicate their lives to the service of their nation.
